BUDGETARIAN SERIES: Dumaguete & Southern Cebu Adventure for Only Php 8,000 ($165)

BUDGETARIAN SERIES: Dumaguete & Southern Cebu Adventure for Only Php 8,000 ($165)

I booked our tickets 8 months prior to our Dumaguete & Southern Cebu adventure and within that period, the places we intend to visit has been insanely sensationalized.

Actually, a week before our trip, I told a friend that I just want to get this over with. I was that pissed, yes.

However, when we landed in Dumaguete and later on got to do my itinerary, all of the annoyance had disappeared.

It was replaced by astonishment of the understanding on the reasons why tourists flock these spots. I literally had that moment of ‘ah kaya pala.’

JUMP-OFF POINT

We took advantage of Cebu Pacific’s seat sale months prior our trip and in order to save time, we flew in to Dumaguete and departed from Cebu.

Plane ride to and from Dumaguete or Cebu takes only 1 hour and 15 minutes.

SAMPLE ITINERARY

After asking other traveler friends who have been to either Dumaguete or Cebu, I decided to do a backpacking escapade since going around in two separate provinces can be costly.

Please note that this trip and our proposed itinerary can be a little bit tiring (and challenging) towards the not-so-young generation.

Honestly, ang sakit sa kasu-kasuan. And with that, ilabas ang salonpas.

Day 1: Manjuyod Sandbar Tour

We have landed in Dumaguete and since we needed to be in Manjuyod Sandbar before noon, we just left our bags in the hotel lobby and changed into our swimsuits. From there, we rode a tricycle and a non-aircon Ceres bus to get there.

After going to Manjuyod, we previously decided to to a Silliman University campus tour since we still have time and to take advantage of our Dumaguete city exploration. Read here to know more about our experience.

Spots to visit:
>> Manjuyod Sandbar
>> Silliman University

Day 2: Apo Island Tour

I was glad that I kept an open mind when we did our Apo Island tour. I didn’t even expect to see a pawikan and we were blessed to see not one but two of them! Apo Island is indeed Dumaguete’s must-see place.

Read here to know more about our experience.

Day 3: Oslob Tour

Most people believe that to get to Oslob, you have to enter thru Cebu City. That is completely false.

It’s actually faster to get there via Dumaguete. It will only take a 30-minute ferry ride to cross Dumaguete to Oslob vs the 2-hour land travel from Cebu City.

From whaleshark watching to admiring the Tumalog Falls, these are just some Southern Cebu spots you can explore if you have more time to utilize. Read here to know more about our experience.

Spots to visit:
>> Whaleshark Watching
>> Sumilon Island
>> Tumalog Falls
>> Cultural Heritage Park

Day 4: Badian Canyoneering

When I think of Badian, I will always associate it with the famous canyoneering adventure. Well, in my defense, this was my target and the main reason why I planned our Dumaguete & Southern Cebu trip.

Heart-pumping activity that will also test our fear of heights? Bet na bet ko yan! In total, we conquered 7 cliff jumps, 2 waterfall slides and hours of mud trekking to Kawasan Falls and that was something to be proud of.

Spots to visit:
>> Canyoneering
>> Kawasan Falls

WHERE WE STAYED

Dumaguete
We stayed at Harold’s Mansion for 2 nights. It is near the city center and walking distance from Silliman University.

Alegria
We stayed overnight at Batong Malunhaw. It is a local government operated resort and is only a 10-minute ride to the canyoneering starting point.

Cebu
We stayed overnight at Executive Pension. It is near the city center and walking distance to most malls and restaurants.

FOOD RECOMMENDATIONS

SANSRIVAL & SILVANAS – Of course, we didn’t miss out the famous sweet treats from Sansrival Cakes & Pastries. After buying a lot of it for pasalubong, we tried more of their pastries while my other travel buddies were exploring the city.

SUTUKIL – A combination of Cebuano words: sugba (stew), tuwa (grill) and kilawin (raw) in which the seafood will be cooked in these three ways. The dish was surprisingly affordable and even enough for the 6 of us to share. Sulet!

oslob-sutukil

LECHONMay kokontra pa ba dito? Though this was my first time to taste a spicy version of lechon, I was blown away! Sobrang sarap naman kasi and no need of a dipping sauce. You might need lots of water though.

TRAVEL TIPS

• From Dumaguete city proper, Manjuyod is 1.5 hour bus ride away. And don’t expect an AC bus, di uso sa kanila yun.

• Join a group tour. It will be more affordable than renting your own boat plus commuting to Apo Island.

• Kindly do not disturb the pawikans and make sure that you are just viewing them from a distance – 5m to be exact. You can be fined if you are seen touching or too close to them.

• It is actually faster to get to Oslob via Dumaguete. The ferry from Sibulan to Lilo-an port only takes 30 minutes vs the 2-hour land travel from Cebu City.

• Always listen to what your guide will tell you. In short, wag kang pabida. Baka ikapahamak mo yan.
